On the way to school with Mom the next morning, I text Jac for the fourth time. Still no response, and nothing yesterday either.

I try to shake off my concern. He probably arrived home late; maybe so late, he overslept. But that doesn’t explain his silence New Year’s Day.

My stomach knots. I need to get this heart-to-heart—this goodbye—with Jac done.

I head over to where we customarily meet, outside the boys’ locker room. While I’m catching up on Instagram, Ryan steps through the swinging door and spots me. “Hey, Bree. You’re not waiting for Jac, are you?”

“Why?” I hope I don’t sound like I haven’t a clue what’s going on.

“He didn’t tell you?” Ryan rubs a hand through his shower-damp hair. “He didn’t make it out of the Finger Lakes; his family got snowed in.” His head slants to one side. “He seriously didn’t tell you?”

I shake my head. “I figured he’d overslept this morning when he didn’t answer my texts.”

“Huh, figured you guys would be tracking each other’s vital signs long distance.” He frowns. “Though when I saw you with Marek…”

My arms cross before I can stop them. “If you have a point to make, Ryan, feel free.”

He shrugs. “I was concerned, that’s all.”

Sarcasm ripples through me. “Well, don’t be. I have nothing to hide.” I turn on my heels and walk away.
